Kelowna Shockwave Therapy - Revolutionary Therapy for Tendonitis

Shockwave therapy is truly ones of those modern technology’s that is changing the face of health care and the management of muscle and tendon disorders.  The research is showing that shockwave therapy has a 90% success rate with Plantar Fasciitis (foot and heel pain), 77% for Tennis Elbow, and 91% for Calcific Tendonitis of the shoulder, which cannot be said for ultrasound or laser therapy. This is just to name a few of the many disorders shockwave has been proven to treat.

Shockwaves were originally developed in the mid-80’s to treat kidney stones, by blasting them in a controlled manner with a lithotripsor, or high-power shockwave device.  Since the late 90’s hundreds of medical clinics across Europe have been using this incredible therapy to treat muscle and tendon disorders, such as plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, shoulder/ rotator cuff injuries, carpal tunnel, Achilles tendonitis, runner’s knee, low back injury and many more.

It took 10 years to cross the Atlantic and reach Canada and the United States, and after 300 published articles regarding the effectiveness of shockwave therapy, the results speak for themselves.
Shockwave is a safe, effective and non- surgical technology utilizing high-energy, short wavelength sound waves, called shockwaves, to treat tendons, bone and periosteum (the pain sensitive membrane on bone). Healing effects include bone and tendon regeneration, increased blood vessel growth (which brings more healing mediators to the injured area) and a chemically induced decrease in pain and sensitivity of the pain receptors.

One of the most intriguing effects of shockwaves is in treating chronic tendonitis.  When a chronic injury persists for months, the body eventually stops the process of healing and shuts down, due to a continual failure to ‘fix’ the problem.  These chronic injuries often are imbedded with scar tissue, which further complicates the condition.  Because the shockwaves re-injure the affected region, they ‘jumpstart’ the bodies inflammatory/healing response, promoting healing once again.  In addition, the shockwaves break down the fibers within the scar tissue, making the area more flexible and supple.

Trigger points, felt as muscle knots, common in the shoulders, lower neck, and upper back are also successfully treated with this therapy and many chiropractors, and orthopedic surgeons  around the world are starting to use this treatment for tissue therapy to stabilize their patient’s condition and create longer lasting results.

What I feel is most important is the fact that results are seen quickly, few treatments are necessary and there is no down time.  You can walk out of the clinic and continue your day, without having to rest or pamper the injured site.

We are happy to be one of only a few clinics in British Columbia using this state of the art therapy.  It has changed the lives of many of our patients and after suffering from my own debilitating injury, it was the only treatment that eradicated the problem and kept me in practice serving Kelowna.

If you do have Shockwave therapy near you, make sure it is operated by a qualified practitioner, such as a chiropractor or medical doctor.
